Marie Tussaud was a French woman born in 1761 who learned the skill of wax modeling from a physician family friend, Philippe Curtius. She worked in Paris during the French Revolution, making models from many of the heads of decapitated people! When Curtius died, she inherited his models and toured Europe, showing them off, eventually settling in Baker Street in London. Since then, her museum has exploded in popularity (and moved to its current site on Marylebone Road). Some of her original work can still be seen in the museum, and many of the models since have been the work of some of the most talented artists in the field over the last 170 years. Its immense popularity means there are now 25 Madame Tussauds museums around the world!
