Leicester Square is especially well known as a cinema and theatre location. While dates have not yet been announced for Christmas 2023, the Leicester Square Christmas Market occurred from the 9th November 2022-8th January 2023. If you’re planning on a winter visit to London, this is not to be missed; stalls selling delicious Christmas treats and beautiful festive lights. A large traveling circus tent is also erected, hosting a variety of music, dance, and performance. It’s impossible not to get into the festive spirit!

Leicester Square in the West End of central London is named after the house built by Robert Sidney, 2nd Earl of Leicester, on the current site of the Square. It is one of the busiest and flashiest areas of London. It originated as a park square in front of Leicester House, then one of the biggest aristocratic dwellings in the UK, which Sidney was obliged to keep as a common area for the local inhabitants. The green space in the middle of Leicester Square has always remained open to the public ever since. However, the aristocratic residential square has changed immeasurably since then. The House was demolished at the end of the 18th century, and a hundred years later, the square had established itself as a theatre and entertainment center. Now, the Square is characterized by some of the biggest, most well-known theatres, cinemas, and casinos in London.
