Learn more about Budapest Bazilika
St Stephen’s Basilica, known as Szent István-Bazilika in Hungarian, is one of the most important churches in the country and the most popular monument in Budapest. The Catholic basilica is named after Stephen, the first king of Hungary, whose right hand is allegedly preserved in the church’s reliquary. Construction was completed in 1905, taking over 50 years to build. St Stephen’s Basilica has two towers, the right of which has stairs and an elevator that are both open to the public. The observation deck allows a beautiful, uninterrupted view across the city. Music plays an incredibly important role in the Basilica, from its consecration in 1905 to the present day. Organ concerts take place every Thursday evening in addition to a regular program of other organ and choral performances. St Stephen’s Basilica is served by the metro stop Bajcsy Zsilinszky út on line M1 (yellow) and Arany János utca on line M3 (blue), as well as the bus stop Hercegprímás utca on lines 15 and 115.
