Learn more about Strasbourg Cathedral
Strasbourg Cathedral, or Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Strasbourg, is one of the most beautiful Gothic cathedrals in Europe and is over one thousand years old. Victor Hugo once referred to the cathedral as a ‘gigantic and delicate marvel’. Construction began in 1015 on the site of a Roman temple and took over 400 years. After a fire destroyed much of the original Roman building, the Cathedral was renovated in the gothic style. The result is a marvel of gothic architecture, including the intricate spire, which at 142m was once the highest Christian building in the world. The cathedral’s façade is covered with intricate sculpture, and the pink sandstone changes color throughout the day depending on the light. The cathedral is home to an 18 m astronomical clock dating from 1842, constructed by a team of artists, mathematicians, and technicians. At half-past twelve every day, animated figures of the apostles emerge from the clock in a complex dance. From Strasbourg train station, take trams A or D to Langstross/Grand Rue.
