Prague Airport, commonly known as Václav Havel airport, connects Prague to over 100 destinations worldwide and serves 17 million passengers annually. Opened in 1937, the airport was formerly called Prague Ruzyně international airport. Czechia’s main airport was renamed in 2012 to honor Václav Havel, the first president of the Czech Republic following the Velvet Revolution. It was the site of a major moment in Czech history, when Soviet paratroopers invaded and took control of the airport on the night of 20–21 August 1968 in order to facilitate the movement of troops and transports for the full-scale Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia.
