Things to know about Barcelona El Prat airport

Learn more about Barcelona El Prat airport

If you're traveling to Barcelona with Ryanair, your plane might take you Barcelona-El Prat Airport (BCN). Or also referred to as Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport. Barcelona's primary international airport is the main point of entry for travelers to the city. El Prat airport is the sixth busiest airport in Europe, and in 2019, it received over 50 million travelers. This represents a 5.0% increase from the previous year.

Now let's dive into El-Prat airport's history. Barcelona's first airport was located at El Remolar. However, due to insufficient space, a new airport was opened at El Prat in 1918. The first aircraft to land at the new airport was a Latécoère Salmson 300, arriving from Toulouse en route to Casablanca. The airport was once home to the Aeroclub of Catalonia. And it also served as the base for the Spanish Navy's Zeppelin fleet. In 1927, Spain's national airline, Iberia, launched its first regular service. The airline traveled from El Prat to Madrid's Cuatro Vientos Airport. 21 years later, a paved runway was constructed following the Spanish Civil War and World War Two. Fun fact: this runway is still used to this day and is known as runway 07-25.

El Prat witnessed its first scheduled international flight in the same year: Pan American Airways Lockheed Constellation travel from BCN to New York. Later between 1948 and 1952, BCN expanded, with a terminal, taxiways, and a second runway (runway 16-34) being added. By 1963, the airport was accommodating 1 million passengers annually. Today, BCN aims to become a major international hub connecting Asia and North America.
